| Neighbouring borough | Median | vs Hounslow | Middle half | Practices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hillingdon | £45 | £5 less | £40–£47 | 12 |
| Ealing | £50 | same as Hounslow | £32–£72 | 23 |
| Hammersmith and Fulham | £55 | £5 more | £45–£79 | 25 |
| Richmond upon Thames | £80 | £30 more | £42–£95 | 19 |
The lowest neighbouring median is Hillingdon at £45 — £5 below Hounslow, from 12 published prices. Both are published prices, not quotes; a practice sets its own fee whichever borough it sits in.
Why do some Hounslow practices list under half the median?
2 of 25 published prices are below £25: West London Dental Centre (£12), Hounslow High Street Dental Practice (£15). A figure this far below the borough median is often a narrower product than the rest of the table (a single session, a top-up, or an introductory offer) — check what the practice's fee guide includes before comparing.
Why are some Hounslow prices more than double the median?
2 of 25 listed prices exceed £100: Banning Dental Group- Brentford (£160), Banning Dental Group-Chiswick (£160). These are typically premium packages or specialist-led treatment; the median is a better guide to what a typical Hounslow practice charges.

What you are paying for
A check-up is an examination, a soft-tissue check for anything abnormal, and an assessment of gum health. Radiographs are often included for a new patient and charged separately afterwards. Ask which, because a £45 check-up with £30 of X-rays is not cheaper than a £75 one that includes them.
How often you actually need one
NICE guideline CG19 does not recommend six-monthly check-ups for everyone. It recommends an interval set individually between 3 and 24 months, based on your risk of dental disease, and its 2018 surveillance review found no evidence that a 24-month interval harmed low-risk adults. If you are recalled every six months by default, it is reasonable to ask what your risk assessment was — over ten years the difference is substantial.
The NHS alternative
An NHS check-up is a Band 1 charge of £27.90, which covers the examination, any X-rays and a scale and polish if you clinically need one. That price is set nationally and does not change with the postcode. The barrier is availability, not cost.
A routine scale and polish every six months does not keep gums healthier than having one when your dentist judges it necessary.
The Cochrane review found that scheduled scale and polish did not reduce the early signs of gum disease more than treatment given as needed. It does remove more calculus — six-monthly more than twelve-monthly, on high-certainty evidence — but the clinical importance of that difference is uncertain. Patients did report their teeth felt cleaner. If a practice sells you a fixed cleaning schedule, this is the evidence to ask them about.
