How We Verify Dental Practices

CQC — Care Quality Commission. Ratings, inspection dates and registration status via the public API under Open Government Licence v3.0, refreshed weekly.

GDC — General Dental Council. Practitioner registration and specialist status cross-referenced against the public register at olr.gdc-uk.org.

NHS ODS. We cross-reference every practice we list against NHS England's Organisation Data Service, matched by postcode and house number — a practice's NHS-registered name is often not its trading name, so we don't match on name alone. This confirms which practices hold an active NHS General Dental Services contract (the "NHS & Private" badge): 1,476 of 2,409 as of 26 August 2026. A contract is not the same as an open list — see checking current NHS availability.

Practice websites. Every private price on this site is read from the fee guide a practice publishes on its own website. It is public information, published by the practice itself. It is never supplied to us by a practice, never estimated, and never modelled — and no practice can pay to change it.

On 25 August 2026 we read 759 London practice websites in full — every CQC-registered practice in Greater London that gave the regulator a working web address. 228 of them publish prices we can use. That is 30%: roughly seven in ten London practices publish no usable price at all.

Reading those sites produced 6,888 price lines. We discard three kinds before publishing anything:

• “From” prices — 1,962 lines, 28% of everything published. A “from” price is the cheapest possible case: the simplest tooth, the shortest appointment. It is an advert, not a price, so none of them reach our figures.
• Ambiguous readings — 473 lines, where we could not be certain which treatment a price belonged to.
• Implausible figures — 747 lines, almost all consultation fees and booking deposits printed beside a treatment name.

That leaves 3,200 usable price lines. Where a practice lists several variants of one treatment we take their median, so a long price list counts once rather than twenty times. Across practices we publish the 25th, 50th and 75th percentile — the middle half.

A borough figure is only published where at least five practices in that borough publish a price for that treatment. Everywhere else we show the London figure and say so. Every table carries the number of practices behind it and the date it was read. See the full price data.
