Endodontist in London

An endodontist is a GDC-registered specialist on the Endodontics list. Complex root canal treatment. Every specialist listed here is verified against the public GDC register.

When to See an Endodontist

An endodontist is a dentist with two to three years of extra postgraduate training in root canal treatment and tooth-pain diagnosis, entered on the GDC's protected Endodontics specialist list. Most straightforward root canals are done well by general dentists — published success rates are 85–95% at ten years — so you don't automatically need a specialist.

Referral is worth considering when the tooth is complex (molars with curved or calcified canals), when a previous root canal has failed and needs retreatment, when the diagnosis is unclear, or when surgery (apicoectomy) is needed. Endodontists work under an operating microscope and use 3D cone-beam CT imaging that most general practices don't have.

Specialists charge 40–60% more, reflecting microscope use and case complexity. A crown is usually needed afterwards on back teeth (£500–£1,000 privately). An NHS root canal is £76.60 (Band 2); with a crown it's Band 3 (£332.10). Ranges from published London fee guides (2025–2026); NHS charges from DHSC (April 2026). See our root canal cost guide.

How to Find One

The definitive source is the GDC Specialist Register: search at olr.gdc-uk.org, choose "Specialist" then "Endodontics" and enter your postcode — every name has verified qualifications. You don't need a referral to book, though most patients come through their general dentist, who can send X-rays ahead. Before booking, confirm the clinician is on the Endodontics list (not just "with an interest in" endodontics), ask for the total cost including any follow-up, and check whether a crown is needed afterwards and who will place it.
