A periodontist is a specialist in gum disease and the structures supporting the teeth, on the GDC's Periodontics list. See one for advanced gum disease (periodontitis) that hasn't responded to routine hygiene treatment, receding gums, loose teeth caused by bone loss, or gum grafting and surgical treatment. Early gum disease (gingivitis) is managed well by a general dentist or hygienist — a specialist is for cases that have progressed.
