An orthodontist is a dentist with three years of extra postgraduate training in tooth movement and jaw alignment, on the GDC's protected Orthodontics list. Simple alignment can be handled by general dentists offering Invisalign or similar, but a specialist orthodontist is worth seeking for complex crowding, significant bite problems (overbite, underbite, crossbite), jaw discrepancies, or treatment involving extractions or fixed braces on children. Under-18s with clear clinical need may qualify for free NHS orthodontics via the IOTN threshold.
